HMRC Tax Investigations
In the UK an individual, partner, company or trust can be investigated by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) for any number of reasons. Investigations fall under one of two categories: those seeking a civil Settlement of taxes due or those under criminal prosecution.
Tax investigations come in all shapes and sizes and may involve one or more taxpayers and one or more years. From the outset of any investigation it is important to try to establish exactly what information HMRC is seeking, which taxpayers are involved, and which years are being investigated.
Time to take control
While the thought of an investigation can be worrying, accepting and facing the investigation should be seen as the start of putting matters right.
By seeking professional advice you will begin to take charge of the situation and take away most of the distress and anxiety that a tax investigation can cause.
